This article talked about the loss of phosphorous in our environment and how this is a result of our carnivorous diet. Phosphorous a nonrenewable energy source that is becoming very scarce to our environment. Phosphorous is a material that is very crucial for food production and agricultural uses. This article is instigating that as a human population converting to a plant-based diet would be the best for the environment. Changing our eating habits would cut back on the amount of phosphorus being used as well as cut back on the amount of methane being released into the atmosphere. As a growing population there will be a higher demand for food, imagine how many planet earths there would need to be to supply every persons ecological footprint.
I found this topic very important to environmental science because this is another case of the tradgedy of the commons where humans are using up too many reasources. As a citizen of earth it is up to us to make wise decisions about our diet and how it is going to effect our environment. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/11/161103124536.htm

As of November 8th, 2016 Donald Trump won the presidential election for the United States of America. As a nation, we are quite divided, many environmentalist are extremely devistated with the results from the election. The issue with trump being president is that the man does not even believe in global warming. This is a huge issue for the environment, and is going to cause a huge problem when he starts electing people who are environmentally uneducated into to powerful positions to make decisons for the environment.
Trumps presidency is going to hurt the environment in many ways. He wants to bring back coal jobs to the united states, which will increase the burning of fossil fuels, which increases global warming. In addition to this he is constantly bashing the subject of renewable energy. This is an example of the tradgedy of the commons, trump is going to use up all of our reasouces and we will be left with nothing. To have a president who values money over preservation and reffers climate change and environmental issues as a joke, is a poor reflection on the great America. https://thinkprogress.org/the-environmental-implications-of-a-trump-presidency-fc298e5fd83c#.6kfkeywsn Being vegan means that one does not consume animal meat or products. Many people go vegan because they believe that it is benefiting the animals, ones health, and ultimately the environment. However according to this article, "Going cold turkey on animal-based products may not actually be the most sustainable long choice for humanity in the long term". These scientists believe that the most environmentally friendly and health conscious diet is one focused on plant based with some type of meat source. On average a normal US citizen needs more that 2.5 acres of land each year to support their diet. That is extremely detrimental to the environment and needs to be reduced significantly.
So why not go vegan? it will reduce that acreage amount to almost .5 vs 2.5. Well at a global view going vegan will effect the environment negatively, because it was the only diet that used no perennial cropland at all, and, as a result, would waste the chance to produce a lot of food. http://qz.com/749443/being-vegan-isnt-as-environmentally-friendly-as-you-think/ Urban sprawl is the migration of a population from a densely populated city to a rural/suburban area. This is not a recent trend its been going on for a long time, however cities and suburbs are becoming overcrowded. This is a problem to the environment because as cities and suburbs are taking over land that belongs to wildlife. Because of this generations to come will have less biodiversity. Infrastructure also adds pollution into the sky.
To reduce the issue of urban sprawl it should be suggested to downsizing the population. That however becomes a controversial subject, because should the government be able to control how many children you are allowed to have, or should that be outlawed. Ultimately, though if we do not think of the long term effects there will be huge effects on the populations society as well as the environment. http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/causes-and-effects-of-urban-sprawl.php Roaches were designed for survival, more so than the human race. They are the most adapted animal on planet earth. This is a grand issue mostly because if we humans continue to contribute to global warming, in the near future roaches may become the dominant species on earth.
In the article roaches were said to have survived both nuclear bombs Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is certain that cockroaches can survive higher dosages of radiation than humans can. Cockroaches are best suited for survival because they can eat anything and metabolize substances ranging from human feces to book-binding glue. Roaches are adaptable to the point where even exterminators can not kill the species in time before the roaches have already built resistance to the poison. Roaches are almost always seen as a burden to the environment, in some cultures they were seen as an upset to the culture. However, roaches do perform helpful tasks like cleaning up garbage and waste we humans leave behind. I find this issue very interesting because cockroaches have been here before the human race and they will most likely survive long after the human race is gone. They have intense survival mechanisms as i stated above, that contribute to there long lasting stay on planet earth. As climate change and global warming increases we humans may not survive, but the cockroaches will. Who would have ever thought that a tiny super bug was far more superior and reliant than a human being. http://www.popsci.com/if-people-were-cockroaches-adapting-to-climate-change-would-be-easy Pollution is defined as a presence of a poisonous substance that is harmful to the earth's environment. It causes environments to become unstable and endangered. Pollution comes in many forms such as air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution etc,. We humans contribute immensely to these forms of pollution. Just by driving a car, we are releasing vehicle emissions which are one of the leading pollutants that cause dangerous health problems like lung disease and asthma. Our heavy industries also do a fair share of contaminating water supplies with chemicals due to underground leakage. However, not all pollution is manmade. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes take a toll on making the earth unsuitable for living things. This article expressed the excessive damage caused by Japans tsunami earthquake in 2011. On top of the casualties from the event, their water supply was contamintated and Nuclear contaminants were released into the air. This was a major problem for Japan. I find this issue extremely crucial to myself and all the inhabitants of earth. Due to our selfish concerns and lack of nurturing for our planet we humans are about to find ourselves in an irreversible situation. I feel like environmental issues are not seen as a concern to the public. They simply do not see the severity of these hazardous problems and refuse to be environmentally conscious. I believe that if the whole world works together to take easy steps in converting to eco-friendly products we could do the earth some good and make it suitable for generations to come. http://www.earthtimes.org/encyclopaedia/environmental-issues/pollution/ California is about to attempt to make a significantly smaller carbon footprint. An action California is taking to reach this goal is cutting down on greenhouse gas admissions. In addition to this the state is offering deals on electrical and/or fuel efficient vehicles, to encourage the public to make the switch to clean air vehicles. There are many difficult challenges that lay ahead in order to decrease the carbon footprint of California. However Governor Brown intends on doing whatever it takes to make this a reality. It seems that the biggest issue is getting citizens to convert to clean air vehicles. So the idea of installing more electric plug in stations will make electrical vehicles appeal more to the public. The infrastructure and agricultural industry need to make some drastic changes as well to help California reach it's goal, less landfills and less methane released into the atmosphere. I find this article very applicable to my life because I am a citizen of California and It is nice to be informed of the actions needed to be taken to lessen the carbon footprint. A lot of the citizens seem to doubt the progress and commitment for this plan to work, but i am a firm believer that with dedication, we citizens will be able to reduce our impact for future generations. http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-ca-jerry-brown-signs-climate-laws-20160908-snap-story.html |
