Rapid evolution of other species happens all around us all the time, and many of the most extreme examples are associated with human influences. Reasearchers have been pulling together data on how these major evolutionary changes are effecting human society. The article expands on these three main issues: commercial fishing, invasive species, and urbanization. There are not alot of traits that humans posses that actually contribute to the envrionment.
Evolution is important but we need to make sure we humans our not loosing our biodiversity. Loss of biodiversity is one of the main results of fast evolution. Our evolutions effect other species evolution as well and that is something we need to think about. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/12/161206111630.htm

According to a monthly analysis of global temperatures by scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies July 2016 was the warmest July in 136 years of record keeping. July 2016 was also warmer then any other month recorded. July 2016 was only 0.1 degrees celsius warmer then other warm Julys. It also appears that 2016 will be the hottest year on record. The monthly analysis by the GISS team was put together from worldwide available data acquired by about 6,300 meteorological stations around the planet. Different types of instruments measuring sea surface temperature, and Antarctic research stations. The global temperature record started around 1880 because previous observations didn't cover enough of earth.
I find this issue of particular importance because high temperatures like this can be dangerous for the environment. Heat waves can be dangerous, causing illness such as heat cramps and heat stroke, or even death. So if people keep adding greenhouse gases into the atmosphere at the current rate they are the temperatures in the world will just continue to increase. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/08/160817085303.htm Coffee is a very popular drink in the United states, many households and resturants use so many coffe grounds. Some Scientist have found some innovative ways to put the coffee grounds to use instead of just thowing them away to a landfill. The scientists are saying that coffee can be used as a water filter. Through experimentation, scientist have observered that coffee powder can absorb many harsh chemicals such as lead and mercury ions. The have also tested this theory with putting the coffee grounds in a sponge like filter. They put the sponge in lead + mecury water for over 30 hours and found that the filter soaked up 67% of the lead ions.
This discovery is really cool to the environmental world because this opens up the doors for new discoveries to find out how to make water clean and drinkable by using reasuable sources like coffee grounds. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/09/160921095417.htm This article talked about the loss of phosphorous in our environment and how this is a result of our carnivorous diet. Phosphorous a nonrenewable energy source that is becoming very scarce to our environment. Phosphorous is a material that is very crucial for food production and agricultural uses. This article is instigating that as a human population converting to a plant-based diet would be the best for the environment. Changing our eating habits would cut back on the amount of phosphorus being used as well as cut back on the amount of methane being released into the atmosphere. As a growing population there will be a higher demand for food, imagine how many planet earths there would need to be to supply every persons ecological footprint.
I found this topic very important to environmental science because this is another case of the tradgedy of the commons where humans are using up too many reasources. As a citizen of earth it is up to us to make wise decisions about our diet and how it is going to effect our environment. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/11/161103124536.htm |
